Of the approximately three hundred prisoners who escaped to the woods from Sobibor, only around sixty survived until the end of the war.
Shortly after the revolt, Sobibor was closed down and any trace of its existence was removed. Pine trees were later planted on the site.
In 1983, shortly after his release from prison for war crimes, Sobibor's third in command, Karl Frenzel, was interviewed by Thomas "Toivi" Blatt, a Jewish prisoner who survived following the prison revolt and escape.
When it premiered on CBS in 1987, about thirty-one million six hundred thousand Americans saw this movie.
This movie premiered on American television, on CBS, on April 12, 1987. It was shown on West German television in January 1989.
"Sgt. Gustav Wagner: This morning, two prisoners escaped from North Camp. Thirteen other prisoners, no doubt inspired by their idiotic example, also tried to escape. If any of you would like to cheer, go right ahead. There will be no more escape attempts in this camp. I'll repeat that. THERE WILL BE NO MORE ESCAPE ATTEMPTS IN THIS CAMP!!"
"Lt. "Sasha" Pechersky: Listen to me! Our day has come! Most of the SS are dead! It's everyone for himself now! Leon Feldhendler: Those of you who survive, bear witness! Let the world know what has happened here! God is with you! Now let nothing stop you! [escape begins]"
