Riz Ahmed has actively throughout his career sought color-blind casting in his roles so one of the attractive features about this film for him is that the characters' ethnicity doesn't matter with regards to the story.
Blink and you miss it. At 4 min and 16 Secs mark. Malik has a tattoo with his wife's name on his chest. The wife's name is in western script. The two boys' names are also there, but in Arabic script.
The lead character was originally called Marcus in the screenplay. When Riz Ahmed came on board, this was changed to Malik.
When Riz Ahmed learned that Michael Pearce was interested in making the film, he immediately pitched himself to the director. Pearce was taken aback by this, not expecting an actor of Ahmed's standing to come calling on him.
At one point on the road in his car, Malik (Riz Ahmed) asks his two young sons about their music tastes, suggesting that they should try listening to Guns N' Roses, Iron Maiden or Megadeth. In an earlier role in Sound of Metal (2019), Riz played Ruben Stone, a heavy metal drummer.
