The director decided not to advertise for cast. Instead, the producer passed the word to friends, and that's how the main protagonists were found. The director wanted people to be surprised with the invitation, and didn't want people just looking for a chance to appear on screen.
Agata Kulesza accepted the part after a meeting with the director, even knowing that a script was not available at the time.
