  • Story:
In 1995, ABC presented a telemovie version of the Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie produced by RHI Entertainment. It starred Seinfeld's Jason Alexander and Vanessa Williams of Desperate Housewives. While this version remained mostly faithful to the original musical (Michael Stewart remains the only credited author of this version), several songs were added and re-arranged, and dialogue was slightly rewritten to smoothly facilitate the musical changes. The musical revolves around an Elvis Presley-type rocker who's about to join the Army. To mark the occasion, his manager's secretary arranges for him to kiss a random fan goodbye on The Ed Sullivan Show. Bye Bye Birdie earned four Tony awards in 1961, including Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical for its original star, Dick Van Dyke. In addition to Alexander and Williams, ABC's production starred Tyne Daly, George Wendt, Chynna Phillips and Mark Kudisch.

TRIVIA

Trivia

Tyne Daly was uncomfortable lip-synching to a prerecorded track, so she was allowed to perform her songs live.

The first adaptation to include the title song as part of the story (a group of teenage girls sing it near the beginning as a farewell to Conrad Birdie). The song is not part of the original Broadway score and was added for the 1963 film. In that version, Ann-Margret sang the song as a prelude and reprised it as the film ended.

Three songs were added for this version not included in any previous one. They include "Let's Settle Down", sung by Rosie to Albert, "A Mother Doesn't Matter Anymore", Mae Peterson's admonishment to her son, and "A Giant Step", a love song for Albert to Rosie.

Tyne Daly who played Mae Peterson said in an interview that her song "A Mother Doesn't Matter Anymore" (added for the TV movie) was written for the original 1960 Production, but it was cut well before the premiere since Kay Medford (the original Mae) couldn't sing. It was put back in to give Tyne a song (and probably to pad out the run time)

The original Broadway production of "Bye Bye Birdie" opened at the Martin Beck Theater on April 14, 1960, ran for 607 performances and won the 1961 Tony Award for the Best Musical. Dick Van Dyke recreated his 1961 Tony Award winning performance for Best Featured Actor in a Musical playing Albert Peterson who was played by Jason Alexander in this television production.
