Despite the American setting, the sets were constructed with the 1.44 m (4'9")-high door handles of an older Australian home, which American writer/director Chris Peckover called a source of distraction and frustration.
Olivia DeJonge and Ed Oxenbould also starred together as siblings in The Visit (2015).
The movie is set in a suburban street in a US city that gets a reasonable amount of snow around Christmas (the city is not described but it's not Pittsburgh, PA as the lead actor says she is moving there). However, the set of the movie was actually in Sydney, Australia (because 5 of the teen actors are Australian). Also, the movie was filmed in January 2016 at the height of a Southern Hemisphere summer! This meant that the production crew had to create enough fake snow so that the house looked like it was set in the middle of a northern US winter.
Originally titled "Safe Neighborhood".
Of the seven key cast, only Patrick Warburton and Virginia Madsen are from the US. The rest are Australian actors.
"Ashley: No, not again with the duct tape! [Luke slaps a piece of tape over Ashley's mouth] Luke: A thousand-and-one uses for duct tape."
"[discussing Robert's preference in Christmas ornaments] Deandra Lerner: Honestly, Robert, this is so... Robert Lerner: Meterosexual? Deandra Lerner: There's no such word. It's metro - metrosexual."
