Although it's not mentioned in this movie, the terrorist also demanded the release of Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof, founders of the German Red Army Faction, who were being held in German prisons.
After the massacre, the Isreali security force Mossad used two clandestine operations to track down those who participated in any way with the planning or execution of the hostage operation, including two of the three surviving terrorists, although some sources dispute that. These operations were chronicled in the movies Sword of Gideon (1986) and Munich (2005).
This movie was shot in the actual locations of the hostage crisis, including the Olympic Village and Fürstenfeldbruck Air Base.
The three surviving terrorists were later traded by Germany as part of the Lufthansa hijacking negotiation.
Originally made for television and aired on ABC in the U.S., but was released theatrically outside the U.S.
"Chief of Police Manfred Schreiber: [Shocked when the terrorists take the helicopter pilots prisoner] What the hell are they doing? General Zvi Zamir: [Bitterly] They are Arab terrorists. They are breaking their word."
"Interior Minister Bruno Merk: Mayor Troger, it's not just Munich - it's our whole country. Six million ghosts have come back to haunt us."
